The Story Behind Our Spices

Our story begins with family, flavor, and resilience.

Our company was founded in Pacoima, California in July 2000 by Antonio Salazar. But to understand why Don Sazon exists, you have to go back further. You have to begin with Antonio’s journey from Cuba to California, and with the life experiences that shaped the way he thought about food, quality, and seasoning.

Today, Don Sazon is led by the second generation, Victor and Denise Salazar. As we continue to grow, our purpose remains the same: to honor Antonio’s original recipes, protect the quality he built the company on, and share Don Sazon with more customers across the country.

Before Don Sazon, Antonio Salazar was a Cuban entrepreneur who owned a small sandwich shop in Havana. In 1962, when private businesses were nationalized, his shop was taken from him.

After refusing to work for the state, Antonio was sent to a sugarcane labor camp for five years. It was an incredibly difficult chapter of his life, but even there, his instinct to feed people well never left him.

Eventually, Antonio became the head cook, responsible for feeding 500 men a day. Ingredients were limited and the circumstances were hard, but he learned to work with what was available and still create food with flavor, care, and purpose.

That belief stayed with him.

Years later, after immigrating to the United States, Antonio carried that same commitment into the business he would eventually build. At 65 years old, when many people are thinking about slowing down, Antonio started Don Sazon.

Seasonings Built on Principle

From the beginning, Antonio believed seasonings should be made with real flavor and real purpose.

He refused to build products around cheap salt just to reduce costs or increase volume. His goal was to create seasonings that delivered better flavor and reflected the quality he believed customers deserved.

Don Sazon started with a handful of original recipes and a simple commitment: make seasonings the right way.

That commitment still guides us today.

Antonio’s original recipes remain unchanged. The ingredients are the same. The ratios are the same. Customers who trusted Don Sazon 25 years ago can still count on that same flavor today.

In a category where products are often reformulated or adjusted over time, that consistency matters. To us, it is more than a selling point. It is a promise kept.

The Second Generation

When Antonio was ready to step back, Victor and Denise Salazar purchased the company in 2017 and continued the family legacy.

Victor had already spent years helping build Don Sazon’s Northern California territory. Before joining the company full time, he built a career in human resources and business operations, working with organizations and learning how people, teams, and companies grow.

When Antonio started Don Sazon, Victor began supporting the business while still maintaining his corporate career. He spent nine years commuting between Northern California and Los Angeles to help grow the company. During that time, he built the Northern California route to $1 million in annual revenue.

That kind of commitment became part of the foundation for the next chapter of Don Sazon.

Denise brought a different but equally important background to the business. After 40 years in the banking industry, she brought experience in contracts, sourcing, pricing, and financial discipline. Her understanding of how money moves through a business helped shape the way Don Sazon approaches growth.

Together, Victor and Denise have continued building the company with patience, discipline, and respect for what Antonio created.

A Business Built with Discipline

Don Sazon is a self-funded family business.

We have grown without outside investors and without chasing growth at any cost. Every decision has to make sense for the business, for our customers, and for the long-term future of the brand.

That discipline influences everything from ingredient sourcing to distribution strategy. It allows us to stay focused on quality, consistency, and steady growth.

For us, growth is not about changing who we are. It is about bringing the products Antonio created to more people while protecting the standards that made Don Sazon what it is.

A Growing Product Line

Over the years, Don Sazon has grown from Antonio’s original recipes into a broader lineup of seasonings.

Our product line includes original Meat Seasoning, Chicken Seasoning, Fajita Seasoning, Adobo, and the Taco Truck line.

The Taco Truck line has become one of the fastest-growing parts of our portfolio. It was created to capture the bold, straightforward flavor people associate with great street food, bringing that “from truck to table” experience to our customers.

While the product line has grown, the foundation has not changed. Our original recipes remain intact, and our focus on bold, consistent flavor continues to guide every product we bring forward.

Growing One Relationship at a Time

Don Sazon is now sold in nine states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

That growth did not happen overnight. It was built the old-fashioned way, through meat markets, foodservice accounts, customer relationships, and one route at a time.

Every new account, every new shelf, and every new opportunity has helped us continue the work Antonio started in Pacoima more than 25 years ago.

As we look ahead, we see opportunities to expand distribution and bring Don Sazon seasonings to more customers across the country. Broader distribution gives us the ability to increase awareness, improve purchasing power, and continue investing in the quality and growth of the business.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

Antonio’s story is not just our background. It is the reason Don Sazon exists.

He lost a business, endured hardship, immigrated to a new country, and started a seasoning company at 65 years old. He built Don Sazon with recipes he believed in and with a refusal to compromise on quality.

Today, our job is not to reinvent what Antonio built.

Our job is to protect it, honor it, and continue sharing it.

At Don Sazon, every seasoning blend carries part of our family story. It is a story of resilience, tradition, discipline, consistency, and bold flavor.

More than 25 years later, that story continues.
